As you know, many initiatives will be on the general election ballot November 7th. We have an opportunity to learn more about the No on 920 campaign at several events in Yakima County next week, so I encourage everyone who can to attend one of these events. The very modest Washington State estate tax impacts only a few of the state's wealthiest families (99.5% of estates are exempt from the tax), so eliminating it will decrease funding for public education and other programs. We need to work hard to make sure all voters reject I-920! Below is the information I have received from the No on 920 campaign. Thanks, Leni Skarin, YCDCC Chair > > Please Join Us: NO on 920 Events > Below is a list of the press conferences and campaign briefings we > are hosting around the state. Since the Court races could very well be decided in the primary, rather than the general election, it is imperative that we get the word out to our friends and neighbors soon. Led by the Building Industry Association of Washington, these conservative special interest groups are going all out to replace three justices with lesser-qualified persons who will do their bidding. They are spending heavily on TV ads in King, Spokane and Yakima Counties. The building industry has forged an unholy alliance with the Christian right wing. A group calling itself the Faith and Freedom Network is distributing what they call a "judicial guide." Both the BIAW and the Network are working hard to oust justices Gerry Alexander, Susan Owens and Tom Chambers. It shouldn't be this way. The courts should not be for sale to the highest bidder. They should not be politicized. As Chief Justice Alexander said, "I am concerned at the disproportionate contributions by special interests. This is the sort of thing that can destroy the public's faith in the judiciary." Incumbent judges Gerry Alexander, Susan Owens and Tom Chambers deserve our support. Films of this type usually have a short run, but in a call to the Yakima Cinema office, the lady said that the film might be held over for another week. Translation: If there is enough attendance and interest, the film will be held over for another week. So if you're interested, now is the time.
