Three members of the Yakima Democratic Women's Club were in the
crowd of 300 or so who greeted U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi at a
spirited (women only) reception in Seattle City Hall last Friday (4/13)
afternoon.
Jo Ann Tollefson, Kathi Bonlender and Deb Hunt all expressed their
delight at meeting the charming speaker and the accompanying dignitaries
that included Congressmen Jay Inslee, Jim McDermott and Norm Dicks,
Seattle Mayor Greg Nichols and King County Executive Ron Sims.
Earlier, Speaker Pelosi met with the Governor Christine Gregoire and
other elected Democrats and headlined a luncheon that was expected to
raise $150,000 for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
In her remarks to the throng at Seattle City Hall, Speaker Pelosi
spoke forcefully of the determination of the Democratic Congress to
bring our combat troops home from the Iraq War "safely and soon."
She also recounted the achievements of Democrats since taking
control of the House and Senate after the November election and spoke of
how honored she was to have been elected the first woman speaker in U.S.
history. Speaker Pelosi praised the work of Washington's most prominent
women in public office: Governor Gregoire and U.S. Senators Patty Murray
and Maria Cantwell.
The reception took place in the beautifully appointed Bertha Knight
Landes Room in the huge lobby in Seattle City Hall. The room was named
in honor of Seattle's first woman mayor who served from 1926 - 28 and
led a major drive to clean up municipal corruption. At that time, she
was the first woman ever elected mayor of a major U.S. city.
