There will only be a limited number of tickets available at the door. When RSVPing, please specify your meal choice: Center Cut Pork Loin or King Salmon.Vegetarian is also available. Gov. Chris Gregoire, who just launched her campaign for re-election, will be headline speaker. Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler is another program speaker along with Peter Goldmark, candidate for state public lands commissioner. Saturday's FDR Dinner crowd will be the largest gathering of Democrats in Yakima in recent years - and will follow the Yakima County Convention that will be held earlier in the day in the Center. Registration will open at 9 a.m. The convention is programmed to no later than 3:30 p.m. to allow for banquet room setup. A no-host reception is scheduled for 5 p.m., dinner service at 6:15 and the program at 7 o'clock. As chair, let me express the gratitude of the Yakima County Central Committee for the generous support of these major sponsors: the Central Washington Building Trades Council, Mid-Valley Insurance, Inc. of Yakima, Attorney Tom Bothwell and Teamsters Local 760. The tremendous turnout at the presidential precinct caucuses in February and the great support for our FDR Dinner clearly show that the Democratic Party in Yakima County is highly motivated and gathering steam - and determined to make an impact in the November elections. "Thanks to you all." A total of 534 folks signed in at the convention, but we estimated that attendance topped 600 when counting non-delegates and spectators who came to the Convention Center. Convention delegates elected 28 delegates and 13 alternates for Barack Obama and18 delegates and 9 alternates for Hillary Clinton. Their next step is the 4th CD Caucus in Yakima's Clarion Hotel May 17. Attendance at the annual FDR dinner that evening was 347 paid, said Ron Bonlender, event chair. It was the largest attendance at this spring fund-raiser exceeding the 2007 number by 225. The Herald-Republic gave us great coverage in Sunday's paper and all three television stations sent reporters and cameras with KAPP-TV doing a live remote with Gov. Gregoire on the 6 o'clock news. The newspaper didn't pick up on one noteworthy item that was posted on our Blog today: * Gregoire Easily Defeats Rossi in Dueling Dinners? Contest in Yakima County*. To the roar of the record crowd at Saturday?s Yakima County Democratic Convention, it was announced that Governor Gregoire easily defeated challenger Dino Rossi when it came to ticket sales at county fund-raising dinners. The score: Gregoire 347, Rossi 275. Cheering erupted when Yakima Democratic Chair Paul George announced that 347 tickets were sold for their annual FDR Dinner in the Convention Center, Saturday evening while only 275 turned out for the Yakima Republicans? annual Lincoln Day Dinner, March 29. George then zinged: ?The score is indicative of what will happen to the governor's re-election opponent in November.? Nearly 550 Democrats signed-in at the Convention to elect Obama and Clinton delegates to the State Convention in Spokane, June 14 and the 4th Congressional District Caucus in Yakima May 17. They elected 28 delegates for presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama and 18 for Senator Hillary Clinton. And they heard a great speech by George Fearing who is running hard to oust Congressman Doc Hastings. Challenged to deliver 1,000 more votes countywide for Governor Gregoire than she received in 2004, Yakima Democrats have pledged to more than double than number. The convention passed resolutions supporting comprehensive immigration reform, public campaign financing of local elections and passage of the Employee Free Choice Act that quickens the process of union certification. Governor Gregoire in her headline speech, emphasized the achievements of her administration in health care, education, transportation, the $850 million budget surplus and creation of a rainy day fund. FDR diners also enjoyed speeches by Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler and Peter Goldmark, candidate for commissioner of public lands. The three speakers came to Yakima after attending county conventions in other parts of the state that day. Message-ID: <4819498B.7050604@yakima.net> First off, thanks to all of you for taking part in our Caucuses, Convention and FDR Dinner and making them the biggest and best in the history of the Yakima Country Democratic Party. It is rewarding to see what we can do when we work together ? all committed to attaining our major goals: the re-election of Gov. Gregoire, election of a Democratic president and election of Democratic candidates for Congress, the County Commission and the Legislature. Right now, though, we have other important Party tasks ? and none involves asking you for money. I am appealing to you to volunteer a little bit of your time by becoming part of a two-person team that gives out free coffee at the Indian John Hill Rest areas on Interstate 90, some 55 miles west of Yakima. We have been approved by WSDOT for five 3-day stints this summer. That allows us to collect MONEY FROM OTHER PEOPLE. A portion of Indian John Hill proceeds will help pay the costs of our Democratic Booth during the Central Washington State Fair Sept. 26-Oct. 5. Your job will be dispensing FREE coffee, tea, cocoa, lemonade and cookies ? and relying on travelers to drop $1 or some coins in the donation can. Most do. The first fund raiser starts Tuesday May 27 (the day after Memorial Day), and goes through Wednesday May 28 and Thursday May 29 ? WESTBOUND. The Central Committee has charge of this stint. Each team will work an 8-hour shift: 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.; 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.; and 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. In 2007, net profits ranged from $600 to $1,800.for our five party organizations who work the rest areas.. We can match up volunteers who don?t drive with volunteers that do and that happens quite a bit.. Of course, it?s better if volunteers choose their own partner. And anyone coming in a camper is especially desirable. You can volunteer by calling Jo Tollefson (678-4094) or by e-mail at jot at nwinfo.net or Paul George (966-5097) e-mail pgeorge at yakima.net. Calls may also be made to Deb Hunt 966-2274. Jo and Lucy Cates (453-5818) will set up the stand May 27. Thanks for your consideration. With your help, Indian John Hill can become a profitable summer activity. It is also fun. Paul George, Chair 966-5097
