Mary Stephenson was elected chair of the County Central Committee at the biennial reorganization meeting last Monday in Carpenters? Hall. Mrs. Stephenson, a retired college administrator and former court administrator for Thurston and Mason counties, succeeds Paul George for the 2009-2011 term. George was elected state committeeman. Also elected were: Ryan Booth, 1st vice-chairman; Dany Adolf of Wapato, 2nd vice-chairman; and Eleanor Hungate, state committeewoman. Mrs. Stephenson announced the reappointment of Ron Bonlender as YCDCC treasurer; and the appointment of E. J. Juarez as secretary. Yakima attorney Aaron Case was elected chair of the 14th LD, succeeding Leslie Wahl who won election as state committeewoman. Ellen (Leni) Skarin was elected vice chair and Rockey Marshall state committeeman. Tom Zeilman was re-appointed treasurer. Case will announce the appointment of secretary at the Jan. 19th meeting. In her first act as county chair, Mrs. Stephenson convened a meeting of the executive meeting, Friday, Dec. 5 to finalize plans for tomorrow?s no-host holiday party that will include honoring two individuals for their outstanding volunteer service during the 2008 campaign. The committee also approved plans for an Inaugural Celebration Breakfast, Tuesday, Jan. 20 at the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel, 9th Street and E. Yakima Ave. Paul George was appointed breakfast committee chair. The event will begin at 8 a.m., with a breakfast buffet to be followed at 9 a.m., by the swearing-in of President of Barack Obama, then his inaugural address and traditional parade. The event will conclude at noon. In setting the ticket price at $15, the committee emphasized that the Inaugural Celebration Breakfast is designed as a low-impact, pay-for-itself event ? not a fund raiser. Further details will be announced. ?The whole idea is to bring together as many Democrats and other Obama supporters as possible in a social setting to celebrate the inauguration of our 44th president on big screen TV,? Ruth, 86, was forced to resign as treasurer in mid-summer, after being diagnosed with colon cancer. She spent part of last week in Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital and that allowed a number of friends to make brief visits. During her illness, Ruth also received care at the home of another son, Roger and Georgine Schmahl. A lifetime Democrat, Ruth was an accountant who generously gave of her time to community organizations. For years, she did the books for the Women's Century Club and managed the food bank near the Southeast Yakima Community Center.
