But their count is inflated and misleading. -- from Factcheck.org and Newsweek. After looking at every one of the 94 votes that the RNC includes in its tally, Factcheck.org finds: Twenty-three were for measures that would have produced no tax increase at all; they were against proposed tax cuts. Seven of the votes were in favor of measures that would have lowered taxes for many, while raising them on a relative few, either corporations or affluent individuals. Eleven votes the GOP is counting would have increased taxes on those making more than $1 million a year ? in order to fund programs such as Head Start and school nutrition programs, or veterans' health care. The GOP sometimes counted two, three and even four votes on the same measure. We found their tally included a total of 17 votes on seven measures, effectively padding their total by 10. The majority of the 94 votes ? 53 of them, including some mentioned above ? were on budget measures, not tax bills, and would not have resulted in any tax change. Four other votes were non-binding motions related to conference report negotiations. STRONG DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES Democrats are gaining momentum in Yakima County as nearly 2,000 people attended the Yakima County precinct caucuses and more than 600 people participated in the County Convention. This participation will make a difference in the Presidential Election - we can elect Senator Barack Obama! We can also increase the Democratic majorities in the US Senate and House of Representatives. George Fearing, attorney from the Tri-Cities, is running an aggressive campaign against the current incumbent who has consistently supported the failed policies of George W. Bush. Here in Washington State, Gov. Chris Gregoire and the democratic legislature have taken action with legislation and funding benefiting children, families, farmers, and large and small businesses (Washington is ranked by Forbes Magazine as the 5th best state for businesses). In addition to Gov. Gregoire, we have a strong slate of statewide democratic candidates, including Lt. Gov. Brad Owen, Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler, Lands Commissioner Peter Goldmark, and others. In the 14th Legislative District, Vickie Ybarra is the only Democrat running for the open seat for position #1. With the Top Two primary method, Vickie needs all of our support to guarantee a spot on the November ballot. Chris Ramirez, running for position #2 against the incumbent conservative Republican, also needs our strong support in the primary. COMMUNITY CAMPAIGN NEWS-JULY Here are key dates and events for July. With the mail-in ballot, the date of ballot mailing is important to the candidates.
